Aberdeen Dragon Boat Races 2011

With a heritage of more than a century, the local community in Aberdeen, Hong Kong, has been hosting dragon boat races to celebrate the Tuen Ng Festival (also known as the Dragon Boat Festival) on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month every year.  The celebration remains to this day a community-wide event that plays a key role in sustaining neighbourhood relationships.  This year, the “Aberdeen Dragon Boat Races 2011” took place at the promenade of Kwun Hoi Path in Aberdeen on 6 June 2011.  Thousands of locals, overseas visitors and dragon boat racing enthusiasts gathered at the bamboo scaffold stage and the waterfront to enjoy the lively, vibrant spectacle.

This year, a total of 68 teams under the “big size” and “medium size” categories competed for a number of prizes, bringing excitement to spectators on the promenades amid the roar of drums, gongs and cheering.  Being the highlight of the races, the “Big Size Dragon Boat Elite Golden Cup” featured elite teams comprising skillful paddlers with professional training.  After a fierce contest, the championship went to the Fishery Dragon Team for a second time.  The Organising Committee for the Aberdeen Dragon Boat Races 2011 has invited Mr Henry TANG Ying-yen, Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, to be the Guest of Honours to present the prize to the champion.

With a view to promoting a caring culture in the community, the Organising Committee has launched a charity race this year, the first of its kind in the Aberdeen dragon boat racing heritage, to raise funds for the underprivileged families in the district.  Live fishes would be distributed to the needy for preparing a family reunion dinner to celebrate the festival.  In addition, the Organising Committee has also introduced the “Experience Dragon Boat Racing” activity in local secondary schools, which aimed at enhancing young people's understanding of the traditional sport as well as helping them grasp the skill in rowing a dragon boat.

With the presentation of a giant flag, the “big size” dragon boat race was kicked off in blessings.  High-spirited paddlers were urged on by the pounding drums and the roar of the crowd.

Enthusiastic spectators gathered at the waterfront as well as on fishing boats to support this signature event.

In the “big size” dragon boat race, boats made their way down the regatta course lane towards the finishing line in full speed.

A glorious moment - Mr Henry TANG Ying-yen, Chief Secretary for Administration of the HKSAR, presented the “Big Size Dragon Boat Elite Golden Cup” to the Fishery Dragon Team.

Watching the dragon boat races was great for everyone, and the elderly in the Southern District were no exception.  They just couldn’t wait to view the races at the Aberdeen Promenade.
Foreign visitors joined the locals to experience all the thrills and spills of the races.  “Hooray!”

Thousands of locals and visitors swarmed the Aberdeen waterfront for a glimpse of the dragon boat exhibit.

On the eve of the Tuen Ng Festival (5 June 2011), the Organising Committee, sponsors and volunteers started off from the Aberdeen Wholesale Fish Market to visit the underprivileged families in the district.

This move also serves to foster art and culture in the community. Under the guidiance of the PolyU lecturer, 40 students have joined this project.  To boost active participation among students, trophies and book coupons will be awarded to the five entries which are selected as landmarks. Distribution of Postcards for Literary Trail in the Southern District

Many modern and contemporary writers have written about the lives and scenery in the Southern District. To promote local tourism and people’s interest in literature, the Southern District Council has developed a Literary Trail in the Southern District, featuring five famous Chinese writers: Chang Eileen, Xiao Hong, Xu Dishan, Cai Yuanpei and Dai Wangshu etc. By tracing the footsteps of these celebrated authors and poets and rediscovering their stories, the Literary Trail in the Southern District takes visitors to the spots where they left their marks.  Perhaps through this journey of discovery, visitors can have a new understanding of the mind and thought of these literary figures when reading their works.

In order to promote the Literary Trail, the Southern District Council has produced a set of 10 different postcards and a site map.  The first batch of those beautifully illustrated postcard packs were distributed to readers in the recent Hong Kong Book Fair and through the libraries in the Southern District.  To further promote the trial to the public, the Southern District Council will distribute the packs at the following 20 Public Enquiry Service Centers of the Home Affairs Department on 18 October, 2010 (Monday) while stocks last:
